Includes material relating to daily events in Atlanta and Richards's book, music, and fancy store, shelling and evacuation of Atlanta during the Civil War, and Richards's travels to New York, N.Y., as a refugee (1864) and return to Atlanta over a year later.

Samuel P. Richards, stationer and book dealer, was born March 3, 1824, in Hooknorton, Oxfordshire, England, and died April 18, 1910, in Atlanta, Georgia. His family immigrated to the United States, first to New York and then to Penfield, Georgia, when he was young. He attended Mercer University in Penfield (1846-1848). He and his brother, Jabez, opened a retail book and stationery business in Macon, Georgia (J.J. and S.P. Richards), and moved it to Atlanta, Georgia, in 1861. The business name wa...
